Narong Daun

A proud Bidayuh hailing from the Penrissen Region, Narong Daun is one of the Borneo`s Finest Indigenous Artist. Her highly stylized work is inspired by both nature and culture; by the lush sights, sounds and smells of the rainforest, and by the brilliant colours and motifs of Sarawak natives societies. Narong is renowned for her vivid Batik Silk Paintings, which she has been painstakingly producing for over 15 years. In her hands, Sarawak`s flora, fauna and cultural artifacts are brought boldly to life; transformed into striking images that fold captivatingly into each other. Here, pitcher plants, Hornbills, Orchids and Heliconias meld with Sape (stringed instrument), terendak (sun-hats) and topeng (masks) in a stunning yet harmonious medley of colours. Narong`s unique style has made her one of Sarawak`s most sought-after artists. Her works have been exhibited in galleries and conventions in Malaysia, Thailand, India, Australia, Hawaii and displayed in Sarawak State Library, the Sarawak Cat Museum, Holiday Inn Kuching (now the Grand Margharita Hotel) and Am Bank Group Kuching among other places. In 2004, she was ranked among the top 10 participant at the prestigious Piala Seri International Batik Competition. From 2001 to 2012, Narong was artist-in-residence at the famous Artageously Ramsay Ong Art Gallery in Kuching. Today she continues to produce and sell her distinctive paintings at INDAH GALLERY Kuching.
