Question: Let’s Get Sustainable: A Five-Day MBA Residency Adventure
Answer: Purpose
This chapter addresses the growing need to focus on how teaching and learning at MBA level can be reoriented toward leading for sustainability and how such interventions can be measured. We share the design and delivery that we have found to be useful in challenging attitudes and developing skills. We also outline the impact of a five day rural experiential learning residency on mainstreaming sustainability into working and personal lives. The international online MBA program under discussion was developed as a means to meet Millennium Development Goal 8: To develop a Global Partnership for Development. Since the advent of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015, the goals we now seek to deliver on are SDG 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all and SDG 17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development. But what has surprised and delighted us over the years is how many other SDGs have been met as a result of this innovative residency program. Perhaps most importantly, this chapter seeks to capture some of the joy and fulfillment that arises from nurturing and supporting students to lead for sustainability. We see our students beginning to realize what is possible in, and for, our world – bridging the divide between urgency and agency in their own communities with enthusiasm and skill. Through their quotes and case studies we gain an understanding of how, as a result of the program, they are bringing their humanity into play in the pursuit of a sustainable future. Therefore, this chapter is their story as well as ours, and we hope as you read this account that their voices come through in their diverse and authentic community settings.
