Question: Sarawak Gazette : The Air Service, 1st February 1929 (Volume Number : LIX, Issue Number : 905)

Answer: The article informed on the incidence involving one of the Government Seaplane “Royalist” in 1929, and how the occupants of the plane, Flight-Lieut. Philips and Ground Engineer T. W. Goodban narrowly escaped death from drowning when the plane was struct by air-pocket and crashed into the river near Fort Hill while on it’s journey from Satok Base, Kuching to Simanggang.

The Dyaks were present to witness the first flight over the District. The regular weekly service to outstations at that time had not started yet and will only start after preliminary reconnaissance work had been completed at the delta of Sarawak River and district.

It is very interesting to note the mode of transportation in the early 20th century. Flights of these light planes were restricted to short voyages due to infrastructure and weather conditions.

Then, Sibu can only be reached under two, Mukah in two and a half, Bintulu in three and a half, Miri in a little over four, and Limbang in approximately five and a half hours compared to now.
