Sarawak Towards Sustainable Transport: The Use Of Hydrogen Buses

Ditulis pada 25 October 2021

Pustaka Negeri Sarawak recently conducted a community talk entitled ‘Sarawak Towards Sustainable Transport – The Use of Hydrogen Buses.

The talk was presented by Pustaka’s guest speaker, Mr. Exquande Bin Hazmee, who is Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd’s (Sarawak Metro) Hydrogen Bus Operations Fleet Manager.

In his talk, he shared about the task entrusted to Sarawak Metro by the Sarawak Government to modernise the public transportation system in major urban areas.

He also explained that the introduction of hydrogen buses in the city of Kuching is also aimed to be a step forward towards decarbonising public transport in Sarawak, and to create greater awareness on the advantages of using clean energy such as hydrogen, especially in the transportation sector.

The hydrogen bus trial operation passenger service was launched by the Chief Minister of Sarawak, YAB Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg on 22 January 2020.

The service is free for locals and tourists, and it operates from 7.30am to 5.30pm daily. Currently the trial operation service is operated within the city centre.
Kuching is the first city in Southeast Asia with a hydrogen bus passenger service and the bus trial operations will serve to prepare Sarawak Metro as it embarks on developing its hydrogen-powered ART system under the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) Project.

Sarawak Metro, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), is focused on providing a safe, comfortable and reliable as well as environmentally-friendly public transportation in Sarawak’s urban areas.
