Student living in East London is messy but fun. The flat looked more squat than home, but we filled it with life. No student can afford Mayfair prices, so we begged, borrowed and carried. Someone even nabbed a table from outside a pub. The colours clashed, but that’s why it worked. Funky retro seating has character, and we care more about story than gloss. I’ve fallen asleep in a battered armchair with a book, and the sofa was another character in the story.

Shoreditch is perfect for this life, and shops in the area thrive on it. We found ourselves in Smithers showroom, and the vintage armchairs carried scars I loved. we were broke students, but it’s survived three house parties and a flood. We’ve all dragged furniture through rain. It’s part of student life. Vintage pieces survive it. Flat-pack won’t last a term, but vintage carries weight. every dent becomes part of the flat.

Looking back after twelve months, you don’t remember the kettle, Highly recommended Site but you remember the sofa. Next time you walk past a market, don’t waste time on the soulless new. Choose a funky accent chair, and make it part of your story.
