Sarawakiana Talk is back this month!

Join us in this interesting Sarawakiana Talk
on “Sabak Kenang” – Journey
to the Land of the Dead by Dr. Robert Menua Saleh, Director, Oral
History Section, Tun Jugah Foundation on 21st July 2016, 2:30 pm at
Auditorium, Pustaka Negeri Sarawak.

Iban ritual
dirges (Iban Sabak) are grouped into
two major categories. The first category is Memorialize Dirge (Sabak Kenang) which is performed the
night of a person’s death in which the chanter or a professional wailer (Tukang Sabak) ‘escorts’ the soul of the
deceased through the journey from the Land of the Living to the Land of the
Dead (Sebayan).

The other
category is the Invocatory Chant (Sabak
Lumbung
) created to invite ancestors of the deceased and other residents of
the Land of the Dead to the Land of the Living for the exchange of gifts and
bidding final farewell between the two parties.

This talk,
entitled Sabak Kenang – Journey to
the Land of the Dead, is about the first category of Iban ritual dirges. It
highlights the significance of Iban’s dead rituals and the extra-ordinary
expert knowledge of Tukang Sabak
reciting her chant using poetic language of the Sabak which are very moving and emotionally powerful of all forms
of Iban ritual poetry.

Sabak Kenang which shall be chanted or
performed by Tukang Sabak from early
evening till dawn the next morning before the burial, shall guide the soul of a
newly deceased person on its journey to the Land of the Dead or Sebayan.

Through this
talk, the audience is expected to gain better understanding as to why many
Ibans are still giving great emphasis on the importance of carrying out ritual
ceremony before they bury the dead body of their family member or relative,
especially in the context of their communal living.

Admission to the talk is FREE! For further
