Participants learn to be ambassadors of unity, national integration

Ditulis pada 12 August 2015

KUCHING: It was a night to remember for more than 500 participants at
the closing ceremony of the 21st Public Library Sports Competition
(Spasm) as each of them had proven themselves to be ambassadors of unity
and national integration.

Besides sporting events, Spasm included
an objective seminar entitled ‘Stand Up With Libraries’ which was
presented by award-winning comedian Harith Iskandar during the opening
ceremony on Aug 7.

“I hope that all of you (participants) will go
home and continue to practise the unity which all of you have felt and
experienced here,” said State Library Board of Management chairman Tan
Sri Datuk Amar Hamid Bugo at the closing ceremony of the four-day event
at a leading hotel here on Monday.

Representing Chief Minister
Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem at the closing ceremony, Hamid
further said the recent declaration of Kuching as a City of Unity by the
1Malaysia Foundation made it very apt for the biennial games to be
hosted here.

The city, he pointed out, has a very rich tradition
of respect and tolerance among the people of diverse races and religions
which bode well for unity and harmony.

Quoting a speaker, he
mentioned the qualities that a person should have for sustaining or
building unity in a multicultural society – no stereotyping, face an
issue instead of walking away and voice out what one strongly believes
in.

“A person must be able to voice out what is on their minds as
silence is like a cancer which works silently but spreads out surely,”
he added.

On another note, he hoped that all the participants
would forge a smart partnership among themselves to further improve
their services as information providers.

Meanwhile, in her speech,
Malaysian Public Libraries Board of Directors (MPAM) chairman Rashidah
Bolhassan said the event attracted 13 state contingents who took part in
volleyball, futsal, netball, badminton, table tennis, bowling, sepak
takraw, dart, golf and traditional games competitions.
