KUCHING: The Sarawak State Library will hold an international Records and Archives Seminar (RAS) 2016 on Nov 14 and 15. This is the first record and archive management seminar organised by the state library to create awareness on the importance of records and archives for the sustainability of history and heritage.

Sarawak State Library chief executive officer Rashidah Bolhassan said it was important to have good practices in record management before archiving.

“Since we started looking into government record management practices over the years, we have noticed a big gap that we need to address.

“In terms of procedures, system and storage places of the department, it could be better. The most challenging part is thehuman resource as we don’t enough people to keep track of records. So we really need to give them training,” she said at a press conference.

Sixteen papers on record and archive management will be presented at the seminar. Six parallel session workshops will be held. Speakers are from South Korea, Australia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia and Malaysia.

The papers are “Best Practices in Records and Archive Management”, “Record Keeping in the Digital Age”, “Risk Management and Technology in Record and Archives” and “Records and Archives in Justice, Advocacy and Reconciliation
Work.”

To-date, 266 participants from local agencies and departments have signed up for the seminar.

“As of now, a total of 196 civil service agencies (63%) have been assisted by us in record management like training,
briefing, advisory visits to department, appraisals and disposal of public records which have gone through appraisal.
