Summary
Heaven Eyes is a fictional work by David Almond. Heaven Eyes follows the story of three adventurous kids (Erin, January and Mouse) who ran from an orphanage for the thrill and for the adventure. To be precise its just an adventure for Erin and January but since before they took off they were followed by Mouse who would told them off if they would not let him tagged along. These three brave kids experience the rough sea on their “voyage” on a raft and ended up at “The Black Middens”. Fortunately for them even though having to lose their raft to the “quicksand” they were manage to get themselves safe and at the Black Midden they are not alone. This is when the fantasy bit of the book slide in. While they were struggling to safe themselves, they meet up with the strange human like “creature” that is named Heaven Eyes. They were shocked when they encountered Heaven Eyes for in the story Heaven Eyes described as having webbed hands, with moon pale face, her eyes were moon round and watery blue, and her voice was high and light and yearning. Now, when Heaven Eyes met them, she wanted to show them to her caretaker or her “Grampa”. Despite the weird or out of the world encounter with Heaven Eyes and the mystery lingers around the existence of Heaven Eyes, Grampa and Black Mitten the three kids were soaked into the life there. Even so, the kids were curious on the mystery and they did uncovered the mysteries. The book is divided into three part; Part One : Whitegates (the orphanage), Part Two : The Black Middens & Part Three : Whitegates. I love concept that the author offered, it started realistically at the orphanage where it gave the picture of the place, Erin who is against the system, the keepers and other. It is an interesting book, because I personally was not expecting the fantasy bit of the book, in fact it does get me wonder did they really leave Whitegates or were they only having the same fantasy of The Black Middens or were they just playing together about being there? I do have the all sort of question for this book and I do love the mystery that lingering the book. Overall it is an interesting book for me, it is not the kind of book that I would normal read although it is fiction but this book really took me by surprise and I actually read it till the end and I enjoyed it. Other than the concept of the book I also like the vocabulary used in the book, anything that is interesting and easy to digest is a plus point for me.
