State Library holds anniversary events for young members

Posted on 07 January 2015

KUCHING: Young members had a chance
to hone their post-holiday brains at the Sarawak State Library’s 15th
Anniversary Celebration when a group of them took part in events in
conjunction with the event yesterday morning.

Lilian Baun, a librarian from Pustaka Negeri Sarawak in Miri, facilitated the two events – ‘Pantas Congak’ and Spelling Bee.

For
the first activity, participants have to rely on mental calculations in
answering mathematic questions. The participants were divided into two
groups – 5-9 year old and 10-12 year old.

In the younger category, Damia Adelia came in first. In second place was Amira Hanani, while third place went to Zamanina Fitri.

In
the 10-12 category, Nur Aliah was placed first. Second and third place
went to Mohd Ashraf and Amir Habeeb Amir Hamzah respectively.

In
the Spelling Bee, the young contestants took turns spelling English
words to see who can get them all right. Things got a bit competitive as
the eventual first place and second place winner had to go through an
elimination round to see who would be the fastest to answer.

The first place went to Darren Chin Yi, who pulled ahead of Audrey Lai.

Third
place went to Ashley Lai, while fourth went to Muhd Qayyum. In a
separate category for 5-6 year olds, the prize went to Allan Lai. Both
activities were held to improve the quality of language and mathematic
of primary school pupils.

The library also ran various other
events yesterday, including movie screenings, health talks, food and
product stalls, and entertainment till the New Year rang in at 12
midnight.
