Learn more about leprosy at library exhibition

Posted on 14 January 2016

Kuching - Pustaka Negeri Sarawak is holding a World Leprosy Day 2016 exhibition at
the Exhibition Area, Level 1 Pustaka Negeri Sarawak.

The exhibition will be held from 1 - 31 January 2016 from 11 am – 7 pm
and closed during public holidays.

Leprosy is an infectious disease that causes severe, disfiguring skin
sores and nerve damages
in the arms and legs. Leprosy is caused by a slow-growing type of bacteria
called Mycobacterium leprae (M. leprae).

The disease primarily affects the skin and the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord and may also strike the eyes and the thin tissue lining in the inside of the nose.

The main
symptom of leprosy is disfiguring skin sores, lumps, or bumps that do not go
away after several weeks or months. The skin sores are pale-colored.

Leprosy
which is more likely to affect children, is generally not contagious.
One can catch it only if there is close and repeated contact with nose
and mouth droplets from someone untreated.

Members of the public are invited to view the exhibition which is
free.
