Activities at Pustaka Miri in May 2009

MIRI – Pustaka Miri is continuing its effort in promoting lifelong learning and knowledge sharing by organizing several more activities next month (May 2009).


 


The first activity to be held in May 2009 is a health talk on ‘The Asthma Issue’ which will be on Tuesday, 5th May 2009 at 2:00pm. The talk will be conducted by Dr. Fam Tem Lom, a General Medicine Specialist from Miri Hospital and he will touch on the causes, symptoms as well as the treatment for asthma in adults and children.


 


During the Miri International Jazz Festival 2009 on 8th and 9th May 2009, Pustaka Miri will take part and open a booth to promote its Sarawakiana series as well as the services and facilities at the library.


 


On 12th May 2009, the library will organize a special program for mothers and mothers-to-be in conjunction with Mother’s Day. Miri Hospital’s Obstetrics & Gynaecology Specialist Dr. Yusmadi Abdullah and Mental Health Association’s para-counselor Jacqueline Buri have been invited to facilitate the program which will commence at 2:00pm. Dr. Yusmadi will touch on women’s physical healthcare while Jacqueline will give a motivational talk for the emotional and mental aspects through her session entitled ‘Blossoming Through The Years: A Journey Into Motherhood’.


 


Several activities are lined up for 16th May 2009 starting with another interesting talk and this time around, it will be on ‘Workplace Romance’ by Lew Teck Yew, a management lecturer from Curtin University of Technology Sarawak Campus. The talk which will commence at 9:30am, will be addressing the issues of romantic relationships in the workplace and its consequences on the human resource management.


 


In the afternoon, the Sarawak English Writers Society (SOSWE) Northern Zone is collaborating with Pustaka in organizing their monthly activity. This month’s activity is ‘Legal Sharing’ by Voon Chen Thong who is SOSWE Northern Zone’s president. The session will take place in the library’s AV Room at 1:30pm.


 


Also at the same time, another smart partner of Pustaka Miri is teaming up with the library in organizing a program on birds. The Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) Miri Branch will once again collaborate in bringing to the community a talk and slideshow on ‘Waders and Birdwatching in Miri’ in conjunction with the World Migratory Bird Day 2009. The chairman himself – Nazeri Abghani will be sharing his interest in birds, birdwatching and bird photography at the Auditorium at 3:30pm. Beforehand, there will be a drawing competition entitled ‘Avifauna of Sarawak for children aged 10 to 12 years old. Limited to the first 40 registrations, the competition will be held at 1:30pm in the compound of the library.


 


There will be an exhibition on ‘The Beautiful Art of Sarawak Beads’ starting 18th until 31st May 2009 in conjunction with Miri May Fest 2009. The exhibition will feature the works of seven (7) local beads artists and entrepreneurs. Visitors will have the opportunity to see for themselves how beadwork is done. The official opening of the exhibition will be on 23rd May 2009.


 


On 21st May 2009, a prize-giving ceremony for the Local Content Competition 2009 (Pertandingan Warisan Budaya Tempatan 2009) will be held. The competition which is organized for the second time, is for secondary school students who have to work in groups and conduct research on the culture of the Sarawak communities particularly in the northern region. They are to submit written project papers which will then be adjudged by professional panel of juries appointed by Pustaka Miri.
