KUCHING: Nearly 200 asnaf (the poor and needy who are eligible to receive zakat) families from Kampung Semariang Batu, Kampung Lintang, kampung Sungai Bedil Besar and Kampung Siol Kandis were invited to participate in a Kasih Insani programme held on Wednesday.

Organised by the Endowment and Waqf division of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) and Sports and Recreation Club of Sarawak State Library (Pustaka), this event aimed to assist those in need in conjunction with the upcoming festive seasons and to foster friendship among the parties involved.

During the programme, each family was provided with food packages as well as the opportunity to choose clothes (sponsored by Butik Kasih) and children books for free.

In addition to the breaking of fast together, the children present were also given duit raya.

A total of 20 Unimas philanthropists had given donations through the Unimas Endowment Fund last year where five percent of their contributions have been utilised to provide the "Box of Love" food packages to these underprivileged families.

Among the sponsors involved were Unimas Holdings Sdn Bhd, Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad, Sarawak Energy Berhad, Unimas Business School, Harwood Timber, Farley (KS) Sdn Bhd, Kebajikan Dayang Fatimah Berhad, Naim Holdings Berhad, Qasturie Offshore Engineering, J&J Services Trading Sdn Bhd, STIDC, Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Berhad, Masnita, Klinik Pakar Pergigian Anmas, Trident Quantum Sdn Bhd, Klinik Faisal, Transnational Insurance Brokers (M) Sdn Bhd, Konica Minolta Business Solutions (M) Sdn Bhd, and YKL & Y Enterprise.

For the Sekampit Beras Sejuta Bahagia campaign, the Unimas Endowment and Waqf division received nearly 300 bags of rice as well as daily food from staff, public and industry partners including Hong Leong Bank and Kechara Soup Kitchen.
