THE INTERNATIONAL ARCHIVES WEEK 2019

Posted on 29 June 2019

Join us in celebrating International Archives Week 2019 with the theme “Designing the Archives for the 21st Century” from 2nd- 4th July 2019!

International Archives Week is celebrated in June, and entails placing people at the centre of what we do. Sarawak State Library (Pustaka) would like to invite 21st century professionals in the field of Information Managers, Records Managers and Archivists, as well as the community, to join and work together with Pustaka, providing opportunities for human-centered design approaches ensuring those in the profession deliver benefits to citizens, customers, stakeholders and communities.

Archives are witnesses to the past. They provide evidence, explanation and justification both for past actions and current decisions that evolves from memory, both individual and society. Sources for memory are Oral recollections, languages, culture and heritage, architecture, landmarks - they all play their part. But the main resource which most of us rely on to learn about the past is Archives.

All parties need to work together with Pustaka in building the collection of our State Archives and ensuring Records and Archive standards and practices are adhered to. Good record keeping and practices helps in preserving our Corporate memory, history, and cultural heritage.

Do extend your co-operation in assisting Pustaka to preserve our memory by supporting us. Be a member of our Friends of the Archive! Participate in our programs and activities so as to understand Pustaka’s role as the State Archive. The community can help Pustaka’s archive grow by making donations and bequeaths of important documents or personal records of individuals and/or corporate bodies.

Various initiatives and programs will be held in conjunction with the celebration such as exhibitions, talks, and workshops. We will share with you our next exciting archive building project. You will be given a virtual tour of our new proposed archive building, and we would like to hear your wishes for the building.

The objectives of this event are to promote awareness on:
1. The functions, roles and services of records and archives, and
2. The need to maintain and preserve records and archives for long-term preservation and its accessibilities

Participants and visitors to the exhibition and programs are encouraged to share their thoughts on “What do we aspire an Archive Centre for the 21st Century to be”.
