Summary
From Jack the Ripper to Frankenstein, Halloween customs to Alexander McQueen collections, Fashioning Horror examines how terror is fashioned visually, symbolically, and materially through fashion and costume, in literature, film, and real life. The volume analyses the crucial relevance of clothes in the horror genre, and broadens our understanding of both material and popular culture, with case studies ranging from sensationalist cinema and Slasher flicks to true crime and nineteenth-century literature. The chapters demonstrate how the grotesque and horrifying lies at the heart of fashion itself, with its propensity for instability, camouflage, and carnivalesque subversion, arguing that dress is crucial to our understanding of character and context within horror. The book is the first to completely analyse the aesthetics of terror and the function of fashion in the production of horror. It is jam-packed with original research and brings together a diverse group of international specialists.
