Summary
Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is a novel by English author Mary Shelley about a young science student named Victor Frankenstein who, in an unorthodox scientific experiment, develops a monstrous but sentient creature. Shelley began writing the novel when she was eighteen years old, and it was published when she was twenty years old. In London, the first edition was published anonymously in 1818. The second edition, published in France in 1823, bears Shelley`s name. Shelley had travelled through Europe in 1814, stopping in Gernsheim, Germany, barely 17 kilometres (10 miles) from Frankenstein Castle, where an alchemist had been conducting experiments two centuries before. Later, she visited the Geneva region (Switzerland), where much of the work was done.
