Summary
This book explain the basic source to anthropological study of demon or sometime called the evil spirit from many perspectives starting from the ancient, medieval until our modern era. The description on how people from various culture and religion experience demon has been carefully organized in this book. It impress me when the author insert the chronology on how demon character in western literature start to fame after the publication of Doctor Faustus book. It also effect the world of television. Then, from my reading, this book also distinguish between supernatural phenomena and scientific phenomena. The belief of demon can come from the things that human cannot explain explicitly from their daily living. For example when we sleep, sometime we feel that our body being tied or hit by something. People during the ancient time did not know how to explain this phenomena. Starting from that, they try to relate that phenomena with supernatural to explain something that they cannot see and explain. In this modern era, there are scientific evidence and reasoning for this case, called Rapid Eye Movement. In my conclusion, demon or evil spirit truly exist. But not all phenomena can be relate to demon. This book really bring its reader to have a critical thinking in observing phenomena that happen surround them.
