Summary
Reading this book gives me new experience in exploring the Mexican folktale. This book tells a great deal of a story about two volcanoes outside Mexico. The two volcanoes is Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. Duncan Tonatiuh had done a stunning job on retelling this tale. The writing and illustration brings beauty and perfection to the tale. This tale is a good way to introduce the children about Mexican tradition and legends. The Princess and The Warrior is a tale about a beautiful and kindhearted princess Izta, and the brave and honest warrior Popoca. Izta was wooed by so many great man but give her whole heart to the warrior Popoca. However, to prove and convince Izta’s father, Popoca has to defeat their people’s enemy, Jaguar Claw. Although Popoca won the battle, treachery robs him of his happiness and he returns to find his love fall into an eternal sleep. Popoca have made a promise to stay by her side forever. And now, the two volcanoes stand beside each other, Popocatépetl blowing smokes out as if to warm and hoping it will wake her sleeping princess.
