Summary
Chinese engagement in revenue farming, the rice trade, mining and estates, and pawnbroking were well known in colonial Malaya. The wealth and influence of the Chinese minority, however, contributed to the development of the colonial state and the modernization of Southeast Asia. The Chinese presence was also prominent in broader economic and social arenas. Wu Xiao makes a strong case in Chinese Business in the Making of a Malay State that the adaptability and dynamism of Chinese family and economic networks, as well as the moral principles that guided interactions within the Chinese community, were major factors in the success of Chinese companies.
