A loosely allied group scientists, students and ordinary citizens struggle to make sense of this suddenly precarious location, and cobble together a plan to save it. The key: awakening a deep awareness in people to a threat they would just as soon forget. The story is about Padang, West Sumatra’s capital. But it could just as easily be Manila or Kathmandu, or even a city in Japan or the Western United States down an active fault line every day.
