This book is a compilation of stories of young children who had to reside in the school dormitory because the distance from home to school made it impractical for them to commute back and forth. The compilation of these stories is based on the experiences of Cikgu Ahmad Faizal bin Osman, also known as Cikgu Emmet, who is the author of this book. He has been serving in Sarawak since the 1990s, a time when the majority of children from rural areas had to live apart from their parents.This book not only touches the emotions of every reader, but also succeeds in opening the eyes of the heart to see how resilient young children were in the past as they struggled for proper education in school, and how determined parents were in letting go of their young children as early as the age of 7, ensuring their opportunity to learn in school. It also beautifully captures the bittersweet journey of teachers’ experience as they educate students in a remote and underprivileged area during that time. This book has achieved its main goal. However, an editor or proofreader is needed for future editions as there are some punctuation and spelling errors that need to be corrected in this book. As for the font, it would be beneficial to use a larger font since the current font size is too small. Other than that, the book is truly outstanding and exceptionally engaging. Students who have had similar experiences might greatly appreciate it, while readers who haven’t undergone such situations will likely admire the resilience of both the teachers and students who endured challenges through difficulties. The book is suitable for readers of all groups. For urban students, it serves as an inspiration with a sense of awareness about how fortunate they are to study in a comfortable environment, with advanced facilities, and always being close to family. For teachers who are still teaching in rural areas, it fuels the spirit to serve, just like Cikgu Emmet. And for those who are not teachers, the job as a teacher is not as easy as it is often thought to be. Highly recommended!
