Autism process information differently with the noises, words, images, and actions where an autistic person may be have processing shutdown and delayed processing. Jokes and sarcasms tend to have an underlying meaning behind them but to an autistic person may take it literally and ask for help to better understand the meaning of the words. Social communication difficulties will arise when an autistic person experience inconsistency in speaking ability, being perceived as unfriendly and rude, and unable to present themselves socially. This social interactions will trigger shutdowns (temporary, total, or partial) or meltdowns. An autistic person may find balance in self-regulation, and committing to routines and personal interests.
