Summary
Spirits Abroad is a collection of ten short stories that blend elements of fantasy and science fiction with a uniquely Malaysian sensibility. Set in worlds filled with mystical creatures, the stories explore how the boundary between what is real and what is not is often blurred, particularly in the context of everyday life in Malaysia. Each story in Spirits Abroad invites readers into a world full of strange occurrences and extraordinary characters. In one story, a Datin recalls her romance with an orang bunian, a mythical being from Malay folklore. In another, a teenage pontianak (a vampire-like creature) struggles to balance schoolwork, overbearing aunties, her first love, and her hunger for human flesh. The stories in this collection span multiple dimensions—ranging from the very mundane, like negotiating with an annoying landlord, to the extraordinary, like Chang E soaring into outer space, a metaphor for the Chinese diaspora. Through sharp humor, the author reveals social, cultural, and identity issues using a fresh and engaging fantasy lens. Spirits Abroad portrays a world where the line between reality and fantasy is incredibly thin, challenging readers to reflect on what we consider "normal." Each story is a unique reflection on life in Malaysia, filled with magical elements woven seamlessly into the everyday experiences of local society. With vibrant storytelling and bold narratives, Spirits Abroad is not just entertaining but also opens space for discussions about identity, culture, and a world that is never truly separated from the mystical. Each tale provides a new interpretation of our world, one that is never far from a touch of magic.
