Emma-Jean Lazarus is definitely the smartest, and probably the oddest, girl at William Gladstone Middle School. Her classmates don’t really understand her, but honestly, Emma-Jean doesn’t seem to get them either. However, everything shifts one afternoon when she stumbles upon Colleen Pomerantz crying in the girls' bathroom. Through Colleen, Emma-Jean starts to see what it’s truly like to be a seventh grader. And what she learns makes her question everything, including why she even got involved in the first place. In my opinion, this is a pivotal moment that reveals how hard it can be to understand the complexities of others.
